The jungle was quiet, with only a few birds piercing the silence. The boar rooted and grunted at the ground, trying to dig up any sort of food source from the ground. A twig cracked in the jungle, and the boar's head shot up quickly, looking towards where it thought the sound was. It failed to notice the pair of eyes that were staring it down from the green and brown mash of jungle that surrounded the Island.

It barely had time to react when loud bang echoed through the jungle; the bullet whizzed through the air and hit it in the head, killing it instantly. Richard stepped out from the jungle brush, boots crushing twigs as he walked to the dead animal. Pulling out a bit of rope the messenger bag along his hip, he tied the boar's feet together to drag him back to the camp. The large boar would feed the camp for at least a couple of days, until they could track the boar better. Richard had gotten lucky when he had spotted the lone boar grazing. He dragged the boar back to the camp in silence, the tents welcoming their leader silently looming, and he made his way over to the skinning rack, where someone nodded with a smile as he brought the boar. "This should last for at least a couple days." he told the woman, before he sighed out, looking over at the various members of his camp before he looked back at the woman. "Has anyone checked on Alto?"

"He's in the medical tent."

Richard nodded, stepping across the camp towards the tent that they had dubbed 'The Medical Tent'. Pulling back the tent-flap, he looked at the teenage boy who laid on the cot. The bandages on his stomach were stained a dull rusty red, and he moved to lift them to inspect the boy's injuries. He had gotten shot in the last skirmish between the DHARMA people, but Richard had removed the bullet and sewed him up. "You're healing nicely, Alto. How're you feeling?"

"Better now. Did they get the people that killed Nikki?"

"They rushed back to the fence before we could get a good hold on them. But we'll get them, Alto. I'll make sure of it. I always keep my word, you know that. Soon, they'll all pay for what they're doing."

"Thank you, Sir."

"You're welcome." Richard told the young boy, replacing the bandage on his stomach. "Try to get some rest. I've got some more food, so I want you to try to eat something later. I need you back in working order as quick as possible. And don't worry, Alto. There's always other battles to fight for Nikki." Richard stepped out of the tent, and his eyes caught the back of the sandy blonde hair of Sawyer. He walked up along side of him.

"How did patrols go this morning, Tom Sawyer? And I'm putting you in charge of watching Alex tonight while Rebecca and I are on south patrol. I'd give it to Ana-Lucia, but she's watched her for the past week. I figure I'd give you a chance to handle Alexandra for a night." The statement was said with almost a smirk as he looked over at Sawyer.

Standing a ways off from the medical tent, James Ford flipped the lighter in his hand open then shut again. Open, the flame danced. Closed, it was extinguished. The lighter was made of silver, the hated Dharma logo emblazoned on the side. At eight years old he had taken it from his father’s pocket when the body had been brought back to camp.

Not bothering to look at Richard when he came to stand beside him, James snapped the lighter shut and stowed it away in his own pocket. Even without looking, even if he hadn’t recognised the voice, there was no doubt who it was. Only one person called him Tom Sawyer, and it was the one person he looked up to and fully trusted among all those here. They were all his friends and his family, but Richard had taken him under his wing after James’ parents had been killed, and the boy had come to idolise him as the years wore on.

“Nothin’ much ta report. They’re gettin’ closer, though. Killin’ us, woundin’ us... they’re startin’ ta get cocky,” James replied in his southern accented voice. He had been on the island his whole life, but his parents hadn’t. He had picked up their accent as a child and refused to lose it now that they were gone.

Finally, he turned to face Richard, a look of disbelief on his face. “You gotta be kiddin’ me. You want me ta look after the little squirt? What tha hell am I ‘spose ta do with her?”

The click of the lighter made Richard look down, seeing the Dharma logo staring back at him. Any other person, Richard would have made a point to ask why he had it, however, Richard knew exactly why the man carried the lighter around everywhere he went.

When Sawyer updated him on the happenings of the morning, Richard actually smiled. It was a small smile, one that paired with a shaking of his head. "Too bad for them when they realise I can be more cocky. They're skating on thin ice; I'd actually feel bad for them if I truly cared."

Of course, Richard didn't care. This was a war. Sure, it was slow moving, but it was a war nonetheless. And Richard wasn't about to go and talk peace-treaties with them. James' voice broke Richard's thoughts, and he blinked, looking over at the man. The look that he wore was sheer disbelief.

"Does it look to you like I'm even remotely kidding?" Richard found himself asking. "Yes. I want you to look after Alex. And please, don't be like your peers and make it sound like it's either the hardest task I've ever appointed on you, or make it sound like I just asked you to kill a puppy. Both would be a gross exaggeration." When Sawyer asked what he was supposed to do with him, Richard shrugged slightly. "Show her the Island. It's large enough, Sawyer, that she hasn't seen it all. Keep her occupied like I once did with you. It's not that hard, James."

Richard smiled so seldom, and most who knew him knew that it often meant trouble for someone, namely those involved with the Dharma Initiative. If they truly were getting cocky and letting their guard down, they were soon due for a rude awakening.

James only hoped it was as harsh and painful as possible. These people deserved to pay, for what they had done to not only his parents, but to so many unsuspecting mothers, and to many of the very people that the Dharma Initiative called “hostiles”. If they wanted to see hostile, he would gladly oblige.

Apparently he had another task to deal with tonight, though. There was one much more terrifying waiting for him.

“She won’t listen ta me. Hell, I don’t think she even likes me,” he tried to argue, but his words were cut short when Richard spoke of their past. He didn’t know what had happened to Alex’s parents, Richard had just showed up with her one day, but had assumed the story was the same as his. It was part of why he avoided the kid. He had enough reminders, he didn’t need to see himself every time he looked at the kid.

“Do I get a leash or somethin’? I’m guessin’ ya made it clear ta her that she can’t go runnin’ off?” Now he was just sounding nervous, something James Ford did not often feel.

"She's six, Sawyer. And she's not a dog; she doesn't need a leash. Try to remember when you were six." Richard pointed out bluntly. "And, she's also a little girl. The only reason I was able to make you follow orders when you were six was because I put the fear of God into you and I showed you what happened when you didn't mind what I said."

Of course, Richard couldn't do that with Alex. Of course, he gave her stern warnings. He had even sent her back to her tent for time out once, but later, she had fallen asleep and had a nightmare, sending him right back to the tent to tend to her. And instantly, it had been forgotten.

However, when he heard the sound in Sawyer's voice, a half smirk crossed his face in amusement as he turned his head to look at Sawyer. "Is that nervousness I hear in your voice?" he asked, almost surprised. "I've watched you go headlong into a firefight without a care or a simple thought, and you're nervous about watching a little girl?" Of course, it was amusing to Richard, almost sadistically so.

His tone turned serious. "Should I just already assume you're going to fail in this task I appoint to you? Because if not, you need to change the tone of your voice. I taught you better than to let simple nervousness creep up into your voice."
